The Time of Day
Five Walls Projects, May 2019
The Time of Day presents paintings that explore written images. Mark Wingrave translates from Russian to English, selects words that resonate and improvises on this. The space between languages becomes a place to stand and paint, a place where abstraction is like an unknown text, and where familiar words suggest narratives, invoking parallel worlds.
The text is from 19thC Russian writer Nikolai Gogol’s: Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka. His stories mix everyday and bizarre realities from old folktales. Mark Wingrave has restaged these supernatural events within the timeframe of a single night.
Gogol’s stories connect with today by picturing a world where the unimaginable happens.
